Outdoor options
With England's five tallest mountains and deepest lake, two national parks, three areas of outstanding beauty and much more on our doorstep, options for days out are endless.
Walk the peaks, cycle the by-lanes, cruise the lakes or just take a scenic drive. There's something for all ages and abilities. Whether you prefer walking, cycling, sailing, kayaking or bird watching, the region offers a wealth of great activities in stunning surroundings.
Exploring the great outdoors you will discover some of the breathtaking scenery, which has inspired writers old and new, and will be drawn to the superb landscapes, which are sure to bring out your sense of freedom and spirit of adventure.
The most popular way to experience the views is on foot, which is why the region has been voted the favourite UK destination amongst walkers. If you like to take things at a slower pace, there are many local rambles, which are both easy on the eye and easy on the foot. We can even recommend walks for buggies and wheelchairs. And for more experienced walkers there are many challenging and exhilarating routes awaiting exploration, so you can get away from the hustle and bustle and discover truly wild and secluded landscapes.
